about

Syria the Healer: Talking over Skype with my cousin Zaidoun about his new, non-violent initiative called the Moral Alternative…on the ground in Syria, he risks his life promoting peace in the face of violence, unity in the face of sectarianism… he asks me to write a song for this new cause… we get right to work over Skype… scribbling on post-it notes… days later, the regime abducts him and holds him at a secret location… solitary confinement in a cell too small to lie down in, sharing a wall with a torture chamber … dark days… after two endless months he resurfaces, alive… no matter how destructive and cruel the regime may be, it is no match for the beautiful, ancient, and healing spirit that is Syria.

lyrics

Now that we have found a voice
We also have a choice
To sink down into hatred
Or reach for higher ground
To buy into divisions
Among tribes and religions
Or to heal this country
To which all our lives are bound

If the regime wants to divide us
Let Syria unite us
If the regime is criminal
Let the people be just
The regime is the killer
But Syria is the healer
The regime is a liar
In the people we trust

There's a boy in Deirazour
Praying for the end of the war
He once recited patriotic poems by heart
That golden bond of trust
In his leaders has turned to rust
His childhood innocence has been blown apart.

(Arabic)

We've been abandoned by the super powers
So a free Syria will be ours
From the villages of Horan
To the Aleppo city streets

The regime is the killer
But Syria is the healer
The regime is a liar
In the people we trust

There's a girl in Hama city
She was young and oh so pretty
Smiling in that photo with her brother and mom
The picture's broken on the floor
No one lives there anymore
The last sound that she heard
Was an exploding cluster bomb

(Arabic)
The regime is a liar
in the people we trust
The regime wants to destroy her
So defend her
We must
